August 1st - 5th, several players from our GameChangers teams joined our BASE Pittsburgh teams in Boston to participate in the 2018 Boston BASEball Urban Classic.
The week kicked off with opening ceremonies hosted by Massachusetts Governer Charlie Baker at the Mass State House. Joined by Sam Kennedy, GM of the Boston Red Sox and Adam Franklin, VP of Franklin Sports, the official supplier or Batting Gloves to the MLB - it was definitely an inspirational first night!
Events continued as our Pittsburgh Teams played teams from New York and Los Angeles at UMASS Boston, before choosing up teams "Sandlot Style" and playing with our friends from BASE Chicago. Players were hosted in dorms at Fisher & Curry Colleges where they experienced a taste of college life, including cafeteria meals and tours of the campuses. Also included in their experience was a VIP tour of Fenway Park, courtesy of the Boston Red Sox and a college & career fair that featured 20 Boston Area colleges and Univeristies, in addition to 8 corporations.
Despite heavy rain and a slight delay, the week capped off with an evening community BBQ and the Highlight game featuring The BASE Boston vs. The BASE Pittsburgh Senior teams, with The BASE Chicago cheering us on from the stands. Pittsburgh had a lead going into the final inning, but Boston was making a come back. Boston was at the plate down by 3 with the bases loaded and the batter on a full count. The pitch was delivered and.......the park field lights turned off!! So we ended a tremendous week of baseball, academics and unforgettable experiences huddled by phone lights together at home plate for one final cheer 1-2-3 BASE! 4-5-6 FAMILY!
Next year' BASEball Urban Classic Experiences will again feature Chicago, Pittsburgh & Boston, but will also welcome Los Angeles, Indianapolis and New York as host destinations. Want to learn more? Visit www.thebase.org.
